Overview

This was the final assignment for a class, Letterforms and Typography, at UC Davis. The task was to use Paul Rand's essay, "Design and the Play Instinct, and provided photos to craft a book with typography and images in a grid layout. We were allowed to work with up to four colors, as well as black, white, and gray.

Production

As soon as I picked out my colors and font and started working on the pages, ideas flowed easily. I used a consistent grid throughout the book: a simple 3x3 column-row system. I figured this would be the easiest to use with a square book, and it was easy to stick to the pattern. Elements I kept consistent were the pop of orange-red for titles or graphic elements (i.e., quote marks), a full-page of image or solid color on almost every spread, and keeping everything within various portions of the grid. To make each spread flow while not being too boring, I played with text placement in various areas of the grid and an alternating pattern of the solid blue background.
